Campaigners' delight as road safety improvements completed
Night Owl keep left bollards have been used a Road Safety Scheme in Leicester. The following story appeared in the Leicester Mercury:
A road safety scheme to tackle speeding motorists has been completed – to the delight of campaigners.
Road humps and speed cushions have been installed and potholes repaired in Stephenson Drive and Swannington Road, in New Parks, Leicester, as part of a £500,000 project.
It followed calls for action from residents in the area to prevent irresponsible drivers using the roads as rat runs.
Plans are also in place to reduce the speed limit in that part of New Parks from 30mph to 20mph.
City councillors joined Leicester West MP Liz Kendall in Stephenson Drive yesterday to inspect the road.
New Parks Councillor Stephen Corrall said: "The road surface has improved beyond recognition and the traffic calming measures are working.
"Motorists were using the street as a cut-through and going way too fast but it's almost impossible to speed now. The state the road was in also made it noisy and dangerous. The whole area looks much better."
Liz Kendall MP said: "I think it's made a huge difference."
The scheme was the biggest project on the Leicester City Council's list of ongoing road maintenance works.
